Who We Are
Sparta Atletik & Motion is a non-profit athletics and running club, whose history dates back to 1898. Today it has over 1,800 members and is made up of three main sections:
– Sparta Løb, which organises recreational races attracting over 200,000 runners annually (including Nykredit Copenhagen Marathon and the popular DHL Stafetten, a relay race for corporate teams)
– Sparta Atletik, which provides training for talented and elite athletes
– Sparta Motion, which is committed to promoting fitness in the community by encouraging people to run together.
Whether you are a new or an experienced runner, Sparta Motion has something to offer you.
Never run before? Sign up for one of our 10-week beginner sessions. We will encourage you every step of the way, and you will soon discover the many benefits of running. You can then join our regular training sessions.
Looking for a group to run regularly with? Choose from one of the many teams which meet at 17:30 Monday to Thursday from Idrætshuset at Gunner Nu Hansens Plads in Østerbro. Find the perfect group for your pace. There are also teams that run on Saturday and Sunday.
Want to improve your running? Benefit from the excellent coaches and the structured training, and learn to run further and faster. Attend strength and technique sessions to improve your running style. Change teams whenever you want, to stretch yourself at a faster pace.
Training for a marathon? Join our marathon-training program Saturdays or Sundays. The training begins in November and is focusing on Telenor Copenhagen Marathon in May.
Want to become part of a friendly running community? You do not need to speak a lot of Danish to have fun with us, and it is a great way to be part of the local community, meet Danes, and to practice your Danish.
Give Us a Try
Before you sign up for Sparta, you are very welcome to attend a couple of training sessions so that you can meet the coaches and find the right group for you. Our list of Training teams shows you which day each team runs, and how fast they run.
The first time you come, plan to arrive at Idrætshuset (Gunnar Nu Hansens Plads 7) at 17:20. Go into the main hall, where you will see other runners gathering. Sparta is in the right side of the hall. There are toilets and lockers there. If you want to leave valuables in a locker, arrive in good time to get one, and bring your own padlock. Runners do leave non-valuables (coats etc) on top of the lockers.
Ask for the Membership coordinator Bente or for a coach.
You will see a board displaying the teams running that day, and their planned route and distance. Teams are divided on pace (tempo) so if you run a kilometer in 6 minutes, your team will be 6:00 (“seks nul”). At 17:30, after any general announcements, each of the coaches will announce the details of their planned run. If you listen out for your team (e.g. “seks null”) you will see your coach and hear what is planned. Then everyone splits up into teams, and heads off for their run.
Do not hesitate to ask for help if you are not sure where your team is!
